A NYC moment. Yo-Landi and Ninja of Die Antwoord with our Japanese waiter Hiro, after dinner at the cheap Italian joint. Hiro enjoyed singing Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr for us, and said he was a samurai, which we all thought was awesome, since Ninja is a ninja, and Yo-Landi sings about samurai.

And: I’ve worked with Terry. I know models who worked with Terry.
And lastly: not commenting on the validity of the accusations being made. I wasn’t there. But perhaps a better venue for actual provable charges would be the justice system, not some star-fucking/star-hating mob on the internet. It’s cheap and easy to slander a reputation, and hard to repair it.

I would also note (again, not saying that this is the case here, I don’t know the model involved) that there is a very real tendency for models to want to pose for nudes or sexual photographs, perhaps during their college years, perhaps as a form of self-esteem therapy during a fucked-up time in their lives, and then a few years pass and they marry a conservative, jealous husband, or they find religion, or they want to run for politics, and then they want to revise history and undo the photographs they’ve posed for.

This is my advice: young photographers, this is why it’s critical to get model releases for every shoot you do, and if the shoot is at all sexual make sure you are satisfying 2257 regulations and make sure you have witnesses on hand to protect you in case model-regret sinks in later, lest your work be held hostage to the whims of someone else’s emotional changes.

My advice to young models: only work with photographers you trust, and only do as much as you’re comfortable with on the shoot. Just say no to things you’re iffy on, even if this means losing out on future work. Feel free to bring a chaperone (this doesn’t mean a jealous boyfriend), and don’t work with anybody who would balk at this request. If you worry about your ability to say no when asked to do something skeevy, I would suggest you are perhaps not temperamentally suited to this type of modeling, and should pose for self-portraits.

If you want an example of how to do this the right way, look no further than Newsweek’s Tumblr account - more specifically, check out the comment and tags for the post above. They’re a serious professional journalism corporation that isn’t afraid to have a voice and a sense of humor - it’s refreshing. I hesitate to use the phrase “They get it” - not because I think they don’t, just because it’s a severely overused phrase - but what I will say is that I enjoy the way they choose to engage their audience (me) online.

More often than not, a “brand” overshadows the “people” who make the brand work, but most people I know prefer interacting with other people online, not with corporate marketing strategies. Newsweek makes me laugh and pay attention because they allow certain personality quirks of the people who work there to shine through; which is such a simple and still underutilized thing.

Other tags I’ve seen recently “Understanding our system of government is hard!” “We don’t care what Nick Sparks says Blood Meridian is awesome” and “Oh for God’s sake we’re really going to have to step up our game”

Well done, folks, well done indeed.

Collaborative Scoring with HitRECord.org

Okay, wanna see how this works? I posted a rough sketch of the score for the in-progress short film “Morgan & Destiny’s Eleventeeth Date: The Zeppelin Zoo” before I left for Mearsy’s wedding this weekend. Today I popped into a coffee shop and found a page full of submissions! Strings, drums, percussion, piano, trumpets, guitars, oh my!

In one weekend, all of these isolated instruments were uploaded on HitRECord.org to go along with the score I wrote. Tomorrow, I’ll be back in my little studio and will start adding these new parts to the score, editing, and then mixing them for the premier screening at SXSW on Saturday.

It’s quite incredible to work this way!

#validating

When I first saw Maestro Nathan Johnson’s creative process, it was gamechanging. I immediately knew two things:

It is wise to structure Creative Processes so that they don’t rely on their best possible outcome, but rather iterate. eg, so the short-term actions are not contingent on the long-term success, but they do feed and add to it.

When this man’s creative process becomes an open thing for the world and the internet to participate in, great things will happen.

It’s uber-exciting to finally see it happening, and I’m honored to have been a part of making it happen :)

zucherman:

“You can be at certain parties and not really be there. You can hear how certain parties have their own implied ends embedded in the choreography of the party itself. One of the saddest times Joelle van Dyne ever feels anywhere is that invisible pivot where a party ends — even a bad party — that moment of unspoken accord when everyone starts collecting his lighter and date, jacket or greatcoat, his one last beer hanging from the plastic rind’s five rings, says certain perfunctory things to the hostess in a way that acknowledges their perfunctoriness without seeming insencere, and leaves, usually shutting the door. When everybody’s voices recede down the hall. When the hostess turns back in from the closed door and sees the litter and the expanding white V of utter silence in the party’s wake.”
